The series “Wine Portraits” is a finalist in the Gourmand Awards

The international competition that selects the best books on food and wine in the world recognises the quality of the photography and the English translation of the books on oenologists published by Publicacions URV

Wine Portraits” is a series of books on oenologists from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili written by the journalist Ruth Troyano with photography by Maoz Eliakim. The series is among the finalists for the Gourmand Awards, an international competition started in 1995 by the Frenchman Edouard Cointreau to select the best books on gastronomy and wine in the world. The identities of the “Best in the World” will revealed in March in a ceremony that will held for the second consecutive year in the Chinese city of Yantai.

“Wine Portraits” will compete in two categories of the Gourmand Wine Awards, namely best photography and best English translation, thus making it the only Catalan and Spanish publication to compete for two different awards. The photography in “Wine Portraits” is the work of the Israeli photographer, Maoz Eliakim, a professor at the URV and resident in Reus. Eliakim photographed the oenologists Anna Espelt, Francesc Ferré and Toni Sànchez Ortiz, using his lens to emphasise the humanism, nature, individuals and landscape that surround his subjects. In addition to recognising the quality of the images in “Wine Portraits”, which are in both black and white and colour, the Gourmand Awards have also chosen the series for the quality of the translations in the three volumes published so far in English, which were translated by John Bates of the URV’s Language Service. The journalist Ruth Troyano wrote the originals in Catalan and these were then translated into Spanish and English by the University’s Language Service. The books are available in all three languages in printed format from specialised bookshops and as digital books online.

For Publicacions URV, it is particularly rewarding that this series of books, which was commissioned by the URV to raise the profile of oenologists trained at the university, should have been chosen by a panel of professionals to be a finalist in the Gourmand Awards. Competing in the 28 categories that make up the “Best in the World” are publications by other sommeliers and experts in wine tourism and Catalan wines and cavas such as Lluís Tolosa with “Guia d’Enoturisme del Penedès”, Ferran Centelles (from El Bulli) with “¿Qué vino para este pato?”, Clara Isamat with “Raíces del vino natural” and Santi Borrell with “Història del Cava”.

The series “Wine Portraits” will be expanded with three new volumes

In the near future, Publicacions URV will present three new volumes, thus taking the series’ total up to six. The first three books focused on different wine regions with protected designation of origin: Priorat DOQ, Tarragona DO, Empordà DO and DO Terra Alta. Continuing in the same vein, the three new volumes will offer portraits of three oenologists who work in the Conca de Barberà DO, the Penedès DO and the Pla de Bages DO.
